A Journey to the marvellous Mountain Reserve of Tusheti in the North-East of Georgia bordering Dagestan and Chechnya.
Deep gorges, mountains up to 4000 m, Defense towers, sheep, dogs and horses: This is the homeland of the ancient Georgian tribe of the Tushs. Most Tushetian villages are inhabited bei their people only in the Summer months from June to October. With the first snow the herds of cattle get driven down to the warm valley of Kakheti where the Tushs spend the Winter in a less harsh environment. Only a few families in Omalo and Shenako remain the whole long winter up in the mountains. Tusheti counts as one of the most remote and still warm and hospital regions of Georgia. The region of Tusheti became a Protected Landscape in 2003 with different zones of protection level. More information here: http://www.gpadc.org.ge/eng/p_tusheti.php
There are three main Tushetian valleys: Pirikiti along the river Pirikiti Alazani, Gometsari and Tsovata along the river Tushetis Alazani and the valley of Shenako and Diklo. All three quite different valleys will be destinations of this journey.

Travel programme
1.Day We meet you at Tbilisi Airport. Transfer to your accomodation. Visit of Old Tbilisi and main spots. Dinner in a typical Georgian Restaurant with wine and the delicous Georgian Cuisine.
2.Day Transfer to Eastern Georgia to village Alvani in the wine region Kakheti. Break. Visit of Alaverdi Cathedral. Offroad journey with Russian 4-WDs Lada Niva on a hazardous road up to Abano Pass of 2926 m into the higland of Tusheti. Overnight in the main village Omalo.
3.Day Visit of the fortress of Old Omalo with a home tower renovated as a museum of Tushetian Culture. Travel along Pirikitis Alazani and via Dartlo to the village Cesho. Overnight at our nice host Bakuri in Cesho.
4.Day Walking tour to the scenery village Dano. Visit of a shepherders camp. Piknik with the shepherders. Overnight in Cesho.
5.Day Walking tour to the villages Parsma and Girevi, Overnight in Cesho.
6.Day Trekking tour of 7 hours to Jvarboseli along Tushetis Alazani. Overnight
in Jvarboseli
7.Day 2 hours Horse riding from Jvarboseli to
Tsovata, Overnight at a shepherders camp in Indurta, Tsovata
8.Day Horse riding, fishing, relaxing in and around Tsovata. Overnight at a shepherders camp in Indurta, Tsovata
9.Day 2 hours Horse riding back to Jvarboseli. 2 hours Transfer from Jvarboseli to Shenako. Visit of Shenako. Overnight in Shenako.
10.Day 4 hours Horse tour through the deep gorges and forests of the National Park from Shenako via Diklo fortress to village Diklo and back to Shenako. Overnight in Shenako.
11.Day Departure from Shenako down to Alvani in Kakheti. Break. Visit of the Academy of Ikalto. Transfer to Tbilisi.
